Transatlantic Bridge

A virtual school project for the European Capital of Culture 2010

 

Transatlantic Bridge is an international project of the Westmoreland Museum of American Art in Greensburg Pennsylvania/USA and the LVR-Industriemuseum in Oberhausen.

Several schools are involved into this project: Greensburg Salem High School – Greensburg/USA, Freiher-vom-Stein-Gymnasium – Oberhausen, Heinrich-Böll-Gesamtschule – Oberhausen and Gustav-Heinemann-Schulzentrum – Dinslaken.

The exhibition "Feuerlaender – Regions of Vulcan", which takes place within the program of the Cultural Capital 2010, is proposed to inspire the students and influence their work. The promoted idea of Leaflet about Transatlantic Bridgethe project "Transatlantic Bridge" is, to build an intercultural bridge between American and German students. All the teenagers grew up in industrial regions characterized by steelmaking and the structural transformation into a new economy, with a large service sector. The boys and girls are working online on topics like, culture, region, history, industry, music, dreams and hopes.
The aim of the project is to evolve different ways of team work, get to know other cultures, work with communication media, make transatlantic friends and be an ambassador of his or her own region.

 

The results of the projects will be printed and afterwards on exhibition in schools and museums.

Interested visitors of the museum can follow "Transatlantic Bridge" and work on the project on an interactive internet platform.

The LVR-Industriemuseum by itself acts as a platform and approaches the Westmoreland Museum as well as the American High School.

The project officially started in December 2009 with a visit of Katie Barnard, Museum Educator at the Westmoreland Museum of American Art and project executive in the USA. The end is supposed to be in September 2010.

School Projects

Heinrich-Böll-Gesamtschule, Oberhausen: American and German students will work on different art themes, which are recorded into sketchbooks. Just half of the book is filled in Germany. Afterwards it will be sent to other schools. If the book is finished, the created pages will be provided online and the visitors of the webpage can release comments in the guestbook: http://transatlanticjournalproject.shutterfly.com/

Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium, Oberhausen: Core of the Project is the mutual development of a screenplay with the subject "structural transformation of our former steel region". American and German students generate a raw version, as well as an index and content, via web conferences and social networks. Furthermore, they turn the result over into a screenplay and produce one film about Pittsburg and one about the Ruhr Area. The films can be seen on the web platform. Both movies will be compared during classes, at web conferences and on internet platforms.

Gymnasium im Gustav-Heinemann-Schulzentrum, Dinslaken: The students develop different projects about various topics in forms of pictures, videos, interviews, etc. Dinslaken: A transformation from a former coal mine / industrial region. Hiesfeld (district where most of the students live and go to school): Change during the past 20 years – from a mining area to a modern technology site. Differences of daily school routine from 1960 until today. Migration: Tourism in a former industrial region.
